Hamster Sudoku

January 28, 2008

So, this week we’re supposed to explore Flickr mashups and third party sites. I’m looking through, and thinking ‘I’m too old for this. I don’t get it. I don’t even want to get it.’ As I scroll down through all this meaningless stuff, I find Hamster Sudoku. And I start playing it! Well, now it’s bookmarked, so I can figure out how to correct mistakes. So, the idea is to mesh your idea with someone else’s. Learning is supposed to be fun. I just have to remember that I’m playing. I always used to say that to parents-playing around with things- and ideas- is how you learn. Hope I can apply that to myself.

The OTHER thing I’m learning is how to use these tabs in Firefox. Not perfect yet, but getting an idea. Sometimes I guess wrong.

Gonna’ try using tags today, or maybe it should be categories, as I read Plloggerr and saw a few things I’m missing.

I will, eventually, get back to the library. I’ll have a blog in What’s Here, and maybe another to supplement programs, maybe. Have to figure that out.

This seems odd. So, what is path, and what is categories? Try things.

Book Blogs

January 27, 2008

In addition to letting people know what new books are in the library, there are millions of book reviews out there. Certainly, linking to them when telling about a book in our collection, will be useful information to share. Now, you can read a few pages of Gimme Cracked Corn and I Will Share, and read a review by Nancy Pearl if you like.

This book is new to our collection. I thought it would be great fun to read with the first graders next week.

Blossoming Possibilities

January 25, 2008

So, I’ve been poking around in people’s blogs, trying to understand what to do with this thing. From reading other library blogs, to reading the article about blogs in this week’s New York Review of Books. Even got into some political ones. Now, as lambing time approaches, I think I’ll try to find the sheep blogs.

I noticed the teen blog at Brooks had a book review for young adults by Linda Hay. (When I can figure out how to create a link to it, I will. It’s probably here somewhere.)

Hey, that’s something good to use this blog for. As a matter of fact, when I was showing our web page (another potential link) to other librarians, I discussed how I wanted to change the WHAT’S HERE page – it’s too hard to keep up to date. This may be the change I need to make.

Another thing I notice, is that this is today’s journal- keeping. The language is more relaxed than in writing the newsletter or something……..even though it IS going public…….there’s something that feels journal-like and not public writing. More relaxed. More sloppy. More first draft.

Today’s post feels a lot less creepy than yesterday’s.

Another thing that interests me is that today is Thursday, January 24, and it’s 7:45 PM. That’s what it feels like, and what my computer says. HMMMM.

Curious

January 23, 2008

I am curiously reluctant to write something that everyone will see. But, that is the assignment for week 2. I’m sure it will get easier. I want to use this to promote the library and encourage more participation in library events.

Right now, there’s something about this process which feels personally intrusive.
