Tripping Around MySpace

March 9, 2008

I’m trying to change my profile, especially, the picture. But still no luck. I was able to add comments to the picture of little paper sheep the first grade had made for me. That seemed SO important?????

So, I found the group and joined, and found Vermont Librarian. I didn’t look for more friends, but maybe I should have entered some of the names of 23 participants.

As I was exploring other groups I realized that this might be a good place to have more info about our book group and the current book they’re reading. So I sent an email to Laura (Laura is the volunteer who organizes our book groups), suggesting that she look at some of these for ideas. Sent her links to a few pages, although I don’t know if she’ll be able to open them. I could set something up for her, and then she could write about the book and invite people to comment. That might be fun for her.

I realize that I don’t have the public-private thing straight. But maybe those photos I posted aren’t too public. So maybe what I do now is send the address to others. I might try that. So, now I have to poke around to figure out how to add friends. It’s a good thing I have to sit still. Yesterday when I went to feed the sheep, it was raining and I got stuck – really stuck – in about 4 inches of mud. Twisted my ankle, so I decided to feed them inside. Mac rammed me, the creep, so I’m sitting on the couch resting my ankle, and nursing my black and blue hip. No permanent damage, but I’m changing things so he’s not in with the girls until…………when I’m finished being mad at him.

Got the picture changed. Of course, now the link at the top doesn’t link to the right place anymore. Let’s see if I can fix that. Poked, but no luck yet making friends. I feel very lonely. I’ve tried…Ah, found it. Sounds like I have to invite people to join and then they’ll see the photos. Let’s try it.

And I did change my profile. All except for my birthday. Can’t lie, I just don’t want it to show. But, I guess that’s asking too much.

WOW

March 6, 2008

At this point, I don’t quite remember what thing 11 is, but I have my eye on MY prize. I’m going to get a little slide show up there. And it’s working, slowly but surely.

Of course, it’s not exactly what I had in mind. It looks very public to me, and yet I had in mind to restrict it to friends. (But the pictures are so small and of such poor resolution that I hope I won’t get in too much trouble. Although, this is a class, and I should hold myself to the highest standards.)

Also, it’s very incomplete. I hope I can edit it, as I realize what I’ve left out. (Wait, Cathi, you don’t need all 295 pictures in there.) So, I next have to prepare photos for the web. That will take a while. Nothing is quite as easy as it seems.

But, mostly, I feel like I’ve come out of my stuckness.

Does this means I have to start on AVATARS now? Is 12 coming soon? Now what?

No matter what the date stamp says, it’s March 5, Wednesday, about 11:30 and I’m going to sleep now.

Time Stamp

March 5, 2008

Then, there’s this whole issue of the time stamp. I noticed that a few of my posts were happening at 4 am. Except, I knew they weren’t. Somewhere I found out that I was on Pacific time. So I changed it. This last post I made was made tomorrow, so I changed the time. So, now, it’s tomorrow in real time, and it says that I made it yesterday. Gotta figure this one out, too. I’ll never get to 12.

Town Meeting Display

March 4, 2008

I’m still on thing 11, and not doing much about it, either, because I’ve been so distracted getting ready for Town Meeting. I spent the weekend getting photos chosen, edited and printed. scenery999.jpgThen last night I thought it would be a piece of cake to transfer the slide show onto the helmet (iMac with the movable screen). There were so many photos that I was forced to streamline things. Finally ended up with 295. That’s ridiculous. (Get me going about my newly developed bad habits brought about by digital photography.) Took forever to transfer, but it was worth it. This was a very nice display of the sort of thing that happens at the library.

The scenery was tacked on the bulletin board, with a photo of each puppet, and a question about it that sort of told the story. The thespians’ (puppeteers to be exact) pictures are on the right, and the computer screen at the bottom is flashing scenes from the three days. I’ll leave it at the school for a few days, then use it to pretty-up the library.

Our increased appropriation was approved with nary a word against. (Of course, this was such a dull Town Meeting that even the 2 million dollar school budget passed with hardly a murmur. Would I prefer the fireworks of the last several years???????)

Well, I’m trying to make this photo fit, and I’m not doing very well. You still can’t see the right edge the way I can in the edit window. I’m never going to get past thing 11 if I can’t make it look the way I want it to look. Gives me something to aim for–getting past 11.

And the avitars that others are posting. I’m getting bogged down with posting my photos on MySpace and missing something here. Wake up, Cathi.

This Course Is Driving Me Nuts

February 28, 2008

So, here it is, quarter to eleven,
I’m so tired I can hardly see, I have to go turn up the heat at 7 tomorrow, and I’m playing around with this stuff-my blog, my MySpace page, my profile,…..grrrrrr.

We’re doing a school vacation week program-STORY-PUPPET-PLAY. It’s a three-day workshop, starting with the story WHY DO MOSQUITOES BUZZ IN PEOPLES EARS. Jody has pulled this whole thing together, in the last two weeks, after all the professionals we tried to hire fell through. It is SO good. Yesterday this collection of kids showed up on time, after one of those snowstorms. Needless to say, Jody and I just barely got there before they did. We both had grand plans.

They are so intent, so focused. I’m Jody’s GOFUR but I fall down on the job a lot, because I’m taking pictures. Pictures of everything, making puppets from scratch, starting the scenery with blank cardboard and a white sheet, backstage at the puppet theatre, the incredible jungle scene, the tickets they create to hand out tomorrow, these beautiful puppets…..

So, besides making a little slideshow for the kids to watch tomorrow, I realize that I need to make a presentation on that MySpace page and give the address to all the parents tomorrow.

I grew up the daughter of a photofinisher and started taking pictures very early-I never had to pay to have them developed. But digital cameras will be my downfall. I took 124 pictures yesterday, and about 180 today.
And I can’t throw many away, because there’s always a great little vignette lurking there. Then, of course, I have to edit them. How did that go about pixels and loading time?????? So, I’ve found about 10 that I’d like to share through MySpace. Coming soon.
Computer about to run out of juice. Must get sleep. To be continued……….

Tangled Up

February 28, 2008

I now have so many accounts and pages that I’m getting all tangled up trying to remember what goes where, what each is named and how to find it again. Thank goodness I did figure out the tabs in Firefox: I can have my MySpace page on one tab, and the 23 things on another tab so I can figure out what I need to do next.

One of the PUBYAC posts was about a MySpace page for a library, which I wanted to see, and had to join to see. So, at last, I did it. I’m still trying to figure out how to join the MySpace Vermont’s 23 Things group. Right now I’m trying to resist emailing Mara to give me a hint, but if this is here, I’m obviously not resisting very well.

Don’t tell me yet, Mara.

Looking at MySpace pages was not inspiring me, until I recalled that I want to have a way to upload photos, and FLICKR wasn’t quite right. So, I’ve been thinking about how to do it, and will link to it when it’s complete. (Because I’ve found out that I can edit my posts.)

Right now, I’m fighting with MySpace to edit my profile. I don’t like my birthday in there. Instead of easier, things get MORE tangled. And, more intriguing.

So, what patron is going to ask me for help on his MySpace page? Or maybe… when do I suggest that that patron make a MySpace page?

You Want Me To WHAT ??????????

February 22, 2008

My response to thing 10: This is a whole new world to me. I’m not ready to comment much, yet. I think I’m a step behind. On the other hand, if this is what kids are really doing, and I want to reach kids, than I have a responsibility to learn a bit. A lot.
Maybe I can get some 8th graders to help me. Or other Middle Schoolers. Maybe I can find a patient 6th grader.

And then I read the title for thing 11. You want me to set a facebook page? Really? Are you nuts? Am I nuts? I have to think about this for a while. Well, really, it’s not much different from what we’ve done already. I have to think of a good approach.

Today, I was doing class visits about vacation week. I bombed in the 7th & 8th grade. When I moved on to grades 4 & 5, I was getting into my stride, but still not there. At grades 2, and 3, I had kids begging for the story. And then 6th. They were really paying attention…they cared. I had written them off as the kids who were too old for me – but
.wait. I just have to find the hook. Maybe a myspace page is the hook. Maybe that’s the way to reach kids today with the same old stuff, just newly packaged.

So, already I’m thinking, how can I connect my yet-to-be-created myspace page to our library webpage. Linking is not a problem. Having interesting stuff is.

It would be great to be ahead of the curve enough to be interesting to the people I want to reach. I just have to think differently. I have to stop thinking 63 and start thinking 14.

I’m too tired tonight.

Hey, I really like this course. Get’s me all shook up.
